The same thing happened in Canada. There has been attempts at some type of reconciliation but it is very slowly implemented. Nevertheless our Constitution recognizes the ownership of the land by First Nations and the treaties are more and more respected but not all without a legal fight. We are getting there slowly. I admire you for speaking out. Thank you.
Thank you for your writing and your efforts on the online museum of racism. This is a brilliant idea and I love the basis on personal family stories and photos. Don't give the fuckers a building to defile, keeping it online and ever growing is the best idea!! I've just donated and will spread the word. I'm a white ally in Oklahoma and the tribes here are major (and only as far as I can tell) educators about WHY they are here and their history before the trail of tears. They have built a system (outside of the maga state govt) that is educating the community and publicizes (via TV and radio commercials) their success despite genocide and continuing hardship for indigenous people. The truth is that the colonizers stole their "idea" for democracy from the indigenous people and this country would not exist without their contributions. Thank you for all your work spreading truth.
“The only reason to erase truths is when those truths threaten you” I give you back your own truer than true words!! People are too stupid to realize this! Great piece, congrats!
Thanks so much for this. The truth needs to get out there. Most people are so unaware. My deceased partner's father was kidnapped and sent to an out of state boarding school. The damage of that was lifelong.
I'm sorry. It really chaps my craw and makes me ashamed that my Scottish ancestors were run off their land in the Highland Clearances. When they were sent overseas, they turned around and did the same thing to the Natives.
TY Sean for bringing this to my attention. I am one of those white kids duped into believing the whitewashed version of America. I have learned more here on Substack from a variety of ppl and their shared history than I ever learned in school.
I’m doing my best to do this in my own classroom. I teach Frederick Douglass and The Grapes of Wrath which are part of our approved curriculum. I will definitely be keeping up with your website for resources. Thank you!
For years I didn't realize how fortunate I was to attend a school with the amazing teachers who taught the real history, as you are committed to doing. It's so, so important. 💙
Any American History class must address and acknowledge all the things you mentioned in this article. Balance and a need to instill critical thinking into all people is extremely important for educational sovereignty and intellectual sanity as well. If you can't think for yourself about matters under discussion it is very difficult to break out of the mold created through educational indoctrination but not impossible. You are very good at coming up with novel concepts and projects that really make a difference. Thank you for your contributions and ongoing efforts to expose the truth and create narratives of knowledge and empowerment. This nation and the world needs so much more of this. Keep up the good fight!
You are correct, and your observations hold true in most countries. History is shaped by the powerful, and it is shaped to suit their purposes. I once had a Jewish acquaintance explain to me that the NAKBA never happened. Really? But he’d been taught this as a child and, as with so many things we learn as children, it stuck fast. So you are on the right track. Best wishes and warn regards from Canada (home to exactly the same kind of whitewashing).
Not teaching the truth is how you raise frighten people that are so sure everyone’s out to get them. Their young men will rape other men and the rest will be fine with killing children.
Thank you for doing this important work. As teachers (now retired) we have ways to instill real curiousity, questioning and truth seeking even while being constrained by standards. Be disruptive...without getting fired.🙂
You are so right. I didn’t learn anything until college, and even then I never learned about things like the Tulsa Massacre until much later in life. The effort to erase DEI initiatives is an effort to erase history.
You are right. Born and raised in Hawaii, I saw firsthand what the US government did to the Hawaiian people and it is disgraceful. And it is still happening. Being nearly half-white and knowing what the white patriarchal worldview is, it is difficult not to despise that half when I seethe with disgust and the injustice. There is absolutely no reason on this Earth why we cannot respect, honor, and appreciate the richness of each others’ cultures and cultural heritages. We can be so much more than what we currently are.
Educational Sovereignty, oh these words ring with truth

Sean, I 100% agree with you. In solidarity.

Well put- so many Scots immigrants did the same thing!

I agree with your vision. Again, thank you!
Ditto!

I didn't read The Grapes of Wrath until I was an adult. I wish that I had decades earlier. Thank you for teaching it in your classes, Brenda.
